Managing EV Car Fires: Facts and Findings on the Fire Isolator Concept
Electric vehicle (EV) fires present unique challenges due to the high temperatures involved. During our tests, EV fires reached peak temperatures of over 1500 °C, while fires in regular combustion engine cars typically reach around 800 °C. The Fire Isolator concept offers an effective way to control these extreme fires and minimize collateral damage.
Using the Fire Isolator blanket to cover a burning EV can reduce the temperature to 600-800 °C. With additional tools like the water mist lance and aerosol unit, we saw temperatures drop further to 200-300 °C, demonstrating the concept’s effectiveness in fire control.
For situations where an EV’s battery is overheating but hasn’t yet ignited, the Fire Isolator concept can be deployed safely without personal protective equipment (PPE). In cases where the vehicle is actively burning, PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) should be used.
Test results have shown that the Fire Isolator blanket is reusable up to 6-7 times, making it both effective and sustainable for repeated use in real-world scenarios.
